Two Bamboo Poems
by Liu Yuxi of Tang Dynasty
Red peach blossoms grow all over the mountain top;
Spring water in Shu River flows down, lapping hillsides.
The blossoms in red wither easily like the love of my boy;
The water flows without an end like my sorrow.
The willow is green and the river water is smooth;
I hear my boy singing and tramping1 by the river.
There’s sunshine at east side and rain at west side.
If say there’s cloud, there’s no cloud.
(or "If say it's fine, it's not fine.")

Self Solace
by Lu Yin of Tang Dynsasty
Sing aloud in gain and stop in loss
Much grief, much regret, but care not.
If having wine today, get drunk today;
If grief comes tomorrow, then grieve tomorrow.

Encourage to Study
by Emperor Zhenzong of Song Dynasty
Rich families don’t need to buy fertile fields;
There are a thousand bushels of millet in books.
Don’t need to build high towers for cozy living;
There are houses of gold in books.
Don’t regret there’s no matchmaker for marrying a wife;
There are fairs with jade-white cheeks in books.
Don’t regret there’s no servant to follow you when going out;
There are groups of coaches and horses in books.
If a man wants to achieve what he wishes,
Read the five sutras in front of the window.

Plum Blossom
by Lin Bu of Song Dynasty
It blooms magnificently alone when all other flowers fall,
And has all beauties to itself in the small garden.
Its sparse shadows stretch crosswise over clear shallow water;
Its faint aroma floats under the moon in twilight.
Birds in frost1, if wishing to fly down, will steal a glance first;
White butterflies, if knowing, will be transported.
Luckily, it has me the chanting poet to befriend,
No need for percussion instrument and golden cups.

Spring in Jade Tower
by Yan Shu of Song Dynasty
Green poplar, scented grass, and road by the arbor;
It’s easy for young men to leave people behind.
The dream’s broken at the dawn bell in my tower;
Flowers lower with parting feeling in the rain of March.
It’s unlikely to be so bitter without feeling as with feeling;
An inch of it can turn to be thousands of threads.
Edge of heaven and corners of earth have an end,
But lovesickness is without edge and end.

Written on Cliff of West Forest
by Su Shi of Song Dynasty
Looking like a ridge transversely, and a peak laterally
The view's different from far or near, from high or low
I don't know what it really looks like
'Cause I am within the range of Mount Lu.

Morning Scene on Spring River in Huichong
by Su Shi of Song Dynasty
Two or three boughs of peach blooms beyond bamboo grove;
When the water in spring river gets warm, ducks first know.
Mugwort’s all over the ground and reed buds short;
It’s the right time for globefish to be in the market.

Happy for Raining in Spring Night
by Du Fu of Tang DynastyGood Rain knows the time,
And so comes in spring.
It falls stealthily at night with the wind,
And soaks everything noiselessly.
Wild paths and clouds are both dark;
Only a lamp’s light in a boat on the river.
When looking at where’s red and damp at dawn,
Flowers so dense in the city of Jin Guan.

Delighting in Rain on a Spring Night / translated by Brendan O‘Kane
Dù Fǔ
A good rain knows its proper time;
It waits until the Spring to fall.
It drifts in on the wind, steals in by night,
Its fine drops drench, yet make no sound at all.
The paths between the fields are cloaked with clouds;
A river-skiff’s lone light still burns.
Come dawn, we’ll see splashes of wet red –
The flowers in Chengdu*, weighed down with rain.
Welcome Rain in a Spring Night (Du Fu, 712-770 AD, China)
Good rain is coming to our delight.
Its early-spring timing is perfectly right.
With wind it drifts in all through the night.
Silently it's drenching everything in sight.
Clouds and ranches are black without moonlight.
Riverboat torches project the only light.
The wet red patches in Chengdu's twilight
Are flower branches, heavier but bright.

Chinese Crabapple
by Su Shi of Song Dynasty
Light hue reflected in gentle east breezes;
Scented mists pervade, moonbeams move round the porch.
Being afraid the flower will fall asleep in dead night,
So burning a tall candle to shine over its red dress.

Shadow of Flowers
by Su Shi of Song Dynasty
Shadow overlapping shadow on the jade terrace;
Several times I call my page to sweep it away, but in vain.
It was just taken away by the setting sun,
But is sent here again by the bright moon.

Writing When Drunk in Watch-Lake Tower on 27th Date of 6th Moon
by Su Shi of Song Dynasty
Black clouds like ink spilt can’t shut out mountains;
White raindrops like pearls leap into my boat pell-mell.
Winds come suddenly, rising from ground, dispersing clouds;
And water below Watch-Lake Tower looks blue like the sky.

Poem to Liu Jingwen

Lotus all gone, no more umbrella-like rain-holding leaves;
Daisy fading, but still has its stem haughty against frost.

Write to the Rhyme1 of “Reminiscence of Minchi” by Ziyou2
by Su Shi of Song Dynasty
What is human life like everywhere?
It’s like a wild goose treading on the snowy earth,
That left its clawprints on earth by accident,
And flew away, not caring to east or west.
An old monk dies and a new pagoda set up3;
The old writing can’t be seen on the broken wall.
Do you still remember the other day on a rugged road?
The way’s long, we’re tired, and the lame donkey brayed.
